I liked him and he never gave anyone the reason not to like him which in his field of fame is quite an achievement in itself….RIP Bernard.

I walking past a side door at Victoria Station in 1976 or 77, I looked in as it was half open. There was Bernard Cribbins putting on a pair of trousers. He froze when our eyes met, but no words were spoken, and I went on my way. I read later he was doing some filming for the Night Ferry.

Appeared in one of the very early Dr Who films (invasion 2150) with Peter Cushing. Sqeezed a few comic moments into that, too.

Was watching Steve Martin and Martin Short the other day and Short says something along the lines of, "You look good, or maybe it's because you have looked 70 since you were 30!" The ones who always looked older always seem to age better than the pretty boys and girls...

Re: Bernard Cribbens -RIP
I’m 47, and I always remember Bernard Cribbens as an old man. I suppose everyone over 40 looks old when you’re a child, or maybe people looked older at an earlier age in them days.

Anyway, RIP. Decent innings.

Seemed like a nice guy. Obviously remember The Railway Children, but also remember him in Fawlty Towers and as the narrator of the Wombles. RIP

Along with Ernie the fastest milkman, I still play Right said Fred on a regular basis when cooking.

Absolutely genius song from a bloke who everyone clearly thinks was a gentleman.

RIP son

Hole in the Ground was the first record I owned. I was 8 or 9. The flip side was Winklepicker Shoes. After 60 years I can still remember most of the words of both songs.

Re: Bernard Cribbens -RIP

You can like Russell T Davies or not, but THIS is how you do a tribute:

"Bernard Cribbins (1928-2022) I love this man. I love him. That’s him as Snout in A Midsummer Night’s Dream. D’you fancy doing some Shakespeare, Bernard? “Let me see the script.” He knew everyone! He’d talk about the Beatles and David Niven, and how he once sat on the stairs at a party impersonating bird calls with T H White. Then he’d add, ‘I said to Ashley Banjo last week…’ He loved being in Doctor Who. He said, ‘Children are calling me grandad in the street!’ His first day was on location with Kylie Minogue, but all eyes, even Kylie’s, were on Bernard. He’d turned up with a suitcase full of props, just in case, including a rubber chicken. And what an actor. Oh, really though, what a wonderful actor. We once took him to the TV Choice Awards and sent him up on his own to collect the award, and the entire room stood up and cheered him. That’s a lovely memory. He’d phone up and say, ‘I’ve got an idea! What if I attack a Dalek with a paintball gun?!’ Okay, Bernard, in it went! He loved Gill with all his heart; he mentioned her in every conversation we ever had. A love story for the ages. I’m so lucky to have known him. Thanks for everything, my old soldier. A legend has left the world."
